Positive Ageing Party

Last Thursday, the pupils of 3rd and 6th Class ,Ballyraine NS hosted a party with a difference ! The party was a celebration of older people in our community and positive ageing. The pupils were busy before the party baking cakes for their guests using free range eggs from the school farm . As the aroma of home made biscuits and muffins drifted up the corridor, pupils were practising for their 'party pieces'.
Guest of honour was Mr Fergus Cleary who took the visitors on a trip down memory lane with shared memories of his schooldays and growing up in Convoy.
He told stories of looking out the classroom at 'the wee dog' and lining up to help at the fair day in Convoy, tattie picking and threshing days. He also told of his many adventures and travel exploits with the band during the showband era. There was even a true story about a night security man using a fishing line and bacon to catch mice through a hole in the floor. 5th Class pupil R. McC. entertained the visitirs with a recitation of 'He's gone to school Wee Hughie' and A. B. Q. played a lovely rendition of 'Amazing Grace'on the tin whistle.
The pupils rounded of the party with a lively singsong including 'I'll tell my Ma','When I'm 64' and You canny shove yer Granny off the bus'.
Then it was time for tea, buns, and a 'wee chat' !
Through hosting this special party, young and old enjoyed sharing some time together and as the last guests made their way home, they all agreed it had been a lovely trip down memory lane.
