S.C. is having lots of fun here!

On Wednesday 6th October we had a very tasty event in the school when parents brought in home cooked dishes from around the world for a ‘Pot Luck’ lunch. This was an opportunity to welcome new parents to the school family and to taste a wide variety of delicious food from various different countries. The EAL children made flags from their home countries to decorate the hall adding to the international flavour of the event. Parents enjoyed getting an opportunity to talk and relax. Of course, they also enjoyed the scrumptious food!!

S.R. and R.W.
R.W. (on right, above) has done a lovely project about Mosques to share and celebrate her family's religion of Islam. She wore beautiful handstitched traditional clothes into school today and presented her project to us. This is the special time of Eid, when Muslims celebrate the end of the month of Ramadam which is a time of fasting and self-denial, like the Christian period called Lent.

R.W. wrote about Eid: 'Eid means happiness to me. I love Eid. I get to meet my family. Eid gives me joy to my family and me. Eid is a day where all families get to spend time with each other. We invite families to our house and have a big feast. I can't wait for big Eid. There are two kinds of Eid. There is small Eid where we just pray and there is big Eid where I spend time with my family.'
Here is a story about Abraham and Isaac, familiar to many of us.

This story of sacrifice and devotion is 'The Story of Ibrahim and Isma’il'

One night, the Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) had a dream that Allah (God) asked him to sacrifice his son, Isma’il (Isaac). When he told his son about this Isma’il agreed and said they must do as Allah wished.

Ibrahim took Isma’il to a valley near the holy city of Makkah, to carry out Allah’s command. On the way the devil tried to make them change their minds. Ibrahim picked up stones and threw them at the devil.

Then Ibrahim blindfolded Isma’il so that he could not see his beloved son while carrying out the Lord’s command. As Ibrahim took the knife to sacrifice Isma’il, Allah sent down the angel Jibril (Gabriel) with a ram. A voice said ‘O Ibrahim, do not kill your son. You have shown your love and obedience to me. Sacrifice this ram instead.’

Every year Muslims celebrate this story during Eid Al Adha (Feast of Sacrifice). Today is Eid Al Adha. In Pakistan many people sacrifice animals in remembrance of the Prophet Ibrahim’s trust in Allah.

S.C. had lots of fun making a jigsaw and writing this story about it!

We had a wonderful ice-cream party and invited all our friends!
We invited all the parents of E.A.L. students to join us for coffee and a chat. It was a wonderful chance to meet and get to know each other, and to make new friends. The children worked hard preparing food and making invitations and the 'Port' computer room was transformed for the morning into a colourful multi-cultural space.
