Chinese New Year
There was a Dragon spotted in Letterkenny on Monday 23rd January!
Fear not, he was of the friendly variety and was here to help
pupils at Ballyraine National School celebrate Chinese New Year.
Four of the pupils, originally from China led the Pupils from
the English as an Additional Language (E.A.L.) class in the
traditional New Year Dragon dance. They were accompanied by
Chinese Music and a selection of instruments. All pupils and
staff in the school were invited to watch the Dragon Dance.
3rd class had a visit from Laura Kee who talked about Chinese
New Year traditions.
All EAL pupils then sat down for a delicious Chinese banquet
of noodles, special rice, dumplings, chicken curry, chicken
drumsticks and special New Year pancake. The food was very kindly
supplied by parents of the school; J. and L. C. who own the
Shangri La Restaurant on the High Road.
The celebrations ended when the children and Mr Oliver, Principal
released a Chinese lantern into the sky and each child received
a lucky red envelope as is the tradition of New Year.
A great day was had by all and we look forward to celebrating
again next year.
