The pupils and staff of Ballyraine NS,Letterkenny
were this week delighted
when they received their Active Schools Flag.
The Active School Flag is a non competitive
initiative which highlights the
importance of P.E., physical activity and sport in schools and communities
in which they are based. This initiative aims to empower schools
at both
primary and post primary levels to commit to a process of internal
self
evaluation as part of a whole school process aimed at improving
provision of
physical activity in their school. It encourages a partnership approach
and
allows for schools to become more proactive in approaching groups
like the
HSE, Local Sports Partnerships and Education Centres in assisting
them in
the promotion of physical activity in their schools.
The flag was awarded after an accreditation visit last week from
Mr. John
O'Donnell Active Schools Co-Ordinator.During the assessment visits
Mr.O'Donnell interviewed staff, pupils, parents and sports facilitators
in the
school. The school also submitted a detailed and comprehensive folder
outlining the wide range of sporting activities available in the
school. Mr.Oliver,Principal said he was delighted that the school
had been
awarded the Active School flag. 'We all work together to promote
the 'Get
Active' message in school. Participation is the key message and
children need
to be encouraged to experience a wide range of physical activities.
It's not
about competition or winning but about creating opportunities and
building
healthy lifestyles. Everyone has played a part in achieving this
success and
we congratulate all pupils, teachers and parents. Mr. Oliver would
like to extend a special thanks to Linda Bennett, dance teacher,
all parents involved in school sporting activities, Myles Sweeney
of the Donegal Sports Partnership, Tag rugby coach John Quigley
and Ms Linda Moore, school sports co-ordinator.
There will be a flag raising ceremony at the school later on this
term.
