| During
Friendship and Anti-Bullying Week we thought about playgrounds: |
Playgrounds
by KH
Playgrounds are a place where fun is made.
Playgrounds are a place where toys are played.
Playgrounds are a place where all work fades.
Don’t you agree?
Playgrounds are a place with swings and slides.
Playgrounds are a place where children hide.
Playgrounds are a place where colourful kites fly.
Don’t you agree?
Playgrounds are a place where families have a snack.
Playgrounds are a place where a race is in a sack.
Playgrounds are a place where there’s an equipment shack.
Don’t you agree?
Playgrounds are a place where people smile.
Playgrounds are a place where everyone runs a mile.
Playgrounds are a place where children will climb.
I would agree. |

Playgrounds
by HK
Playgrounds
are such busy places.
People
walking,
running,
jumping.
Playgrounds
are such noisy places.
People
talking,
crying,
screaming.
Playgrounds
are such good places.
People
having fun,
making friends,
creating memories. |

Playgrounds
by SB
Playgrounds are fun,
Playgrounds are swingy,
Playgrounds are like a zoo,
Playgrounds are sometimes good craic.
You know what I mean?
Playgrounds are big,
Playgrounds are secrets,
Playgrounds are gangs,
Playgrounds are sometimes full of emotions.
You know what I mean?
Playgrounds are places where friends are found,
Playgrounds are places where girls giggle
Playgrounds are places where boys talk about girls.
You know what I mean?
Playgrounds sometimes feel like cuts and bruises.
Playgrounds sometimes smell like food from the staff room.
Playgrounds sometimes sound like a choir.
You know what I mean?
Playgrounds
I like them.
Do you? |

Playgrounds
by DW
School playgrounds are popular places,
Plenty of people and plenty of faces.
People playing football,
girls gossiping by the wall,
children playing tag,
boys shouting,
girls screaming,
teachers shaming.
Yep, that’s a school playground, alright.

A Day in the Life of a Hired Child
by JB
Up in the mornin’.
Away ye go
to milk the cows,
the field to sow.
The farmer yells
“Away out of bed.”
The kids must have had
a very sore head.
The lads would rake
while the lassies would bake.
The mother would say
“Get fish from the lake,
put the bread on to bake,
go on, look awake
or no money you’ll make.”
The poor children’s bones
would ache and burn.
“Please no more
butter for me to churn.”
Well, that was away
back in the day,
but even yet
we win the hay. |

Hiring Fairs
By JMcI
The Hiring Fair
is a horrible place.
Children are sold to rich farmers.
Mothers and daughters,
fathers and sons
all torn apart.
They do all this
to get one thing –
money.
Money to feed them.
Money to keep the house.
Money to keep them warm.
Money to keep them alive.
The children are put into slavery for six months;
all for a few pounds. |

The Hiring Fairs
by AW
The Hiring Fairs
were a time for despair
for young boys and girls.
Long hours.
Boys outside.
Girls inside.
No sleep ins.
Work before breakfast.
Your only possessions
a bundle of clothes.
Months of milking
and churning butter.
So many jobs to do.
At least you’ll get fed
........if not well paid! |
|
The Hiring Fair
by LW
Hiring fairs are a place
where children were sold,
like a lot of really bad news
just waiting to be told.
When you’re hired
it fills you with dread,
just thinking about
what lies ahead.
As you walk down the lane
wanting to complain,
feeling your life
has been sucked down the drain. |
